Children of the Mountain is a UK Charity Commission Registration number: 1142469. The charity was founded to address the educational needs of the children and community of Tandrang, a remote area of Nepal, dependent on subsistence farming.
'OUR OBJECTIVES'
- To build and maintain school buildings
- To ensure every child receives an education
- To provide basic school supplies and teaching aids
- To train and support teachers
- To provide adequate sanitation and clean water supplies to schools
Tandrang has three High schools and ten primary schools supporting 2,500 pupils. The physical infrastructure is inadequate, medical facilities and sanitation limited, there is minimal support from the authorities within Nepal and no interaction with International agencies. The schools we support are 'no fee' government schools. In addition to funding the building of new schools we provide uniforms, school supplies and meals to the poorest children in the community who otherwise would not receive an education.
We are investing time, energy and funding for the longer term. We have set a target of five years to have completed the Physical infrastructure of one high school and three primary schools, and to have in place in Tandrang the foundations of a self managing organisation providing quality education and opportunity.
'NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND'
One of our immediate priorities is to identify the number of children in Tandrang who do not attend school, understand the reasons behind this and attempt to overcome them. Of course it’s a noble goal to provide education to all, and we look forward to the day we do not pass a child on the trail who is excluded from school and literally being left behind. However there are practicalities on the ground that we have to
accept, economic social and geographical, and challenges to overcome in regard to caste and gender bias.
We accept that it may not be possible, at least in the short term to ensure every child in Tandrang will receive an education, however our long term goal remains unchanged; to ensure no child is left behind.
